ABSTRACT

In the post-epidemic era, the labor market has become increasingly complex, making it even more crucial to incorporate sustainability into employment demand. As we enter the post-pandemic era, a globalization trend has become more apparent. It is crucial to modernize employability through educational reform in order to assist employees in enhancing their professional skills. This study began by analyzing the importance of financial engineering practice instruction and graduate employability in the post-epidemic era. Second, the study proposed the content and a plan for inter-disciplinary teaching reform to address talent cultivation needs based on labor market requirements. Third, a face-to-face survey and interview were conducted with students affected by changes in teaching, and the results were analyzed and summarized. On this basis, the impact of education reform was evaluated using both the expert scoring method and the analytic hierarchy approach. The results indicated that the suggested financial engineering teaching reform program improved the school's discipline strength, enrollment rate, employment rate, and competition awards, especially discipline strength. This research can be used to inform the teaching of financial engineering majors in various countries, assist job candidates in enhancing their professional skills, and build a formidable talent pool for the labor market.

ABSTRACT

It is difficult to predict what will happen tomorrow, let alone predict the future of 3PLs in the coming decade. After all, in early 2020, who could have foreseen the upheaval the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to supply chains across the globe? Faced with so much uncertainty, one may want to take the approach of many futurists who think about time in a different way. Instead of thinking in linear terms and throwing darts several years into the future, they start with identifying more highly probable events in the short term and work outward (Webb, 2019). So, while we do not own a crystal ball, we are convinced that two currently emerging aspects, you could call them trends, will shape the foreseeable future of third-party logistics providers (3PLs). First, pronounced technological advancements pertaining to hardware and software increasingly impact the future of corporate supply chain management. Second, elements and events within supply chains are getting more difficult to predict. Looking at the next five to ten years, 3PLs will need to proactively address these trends because it directly influences the 3PLs success and because it influences the 3PLs' clients' success and their associated demand for logistics services. While both trends raise challenges, they also offer ample opportunities for 3PLs by enhancing their current services and developing new offerings. ABSTRACT

Due to the outbreak of COVID 19, an online bilingual curriculum was conducted via "Google Meet." The learning material was developed and implemented by using a smartphone application, STEMUP, based on augmented reality (AR) and automatic speech recognition (ASR) technologies. This study investigated the oral performance and perceptions of learning with STEMUP of ninety non-English major students from several colleges at a technical university in Taiwan. Data were collected from pre- and post-tests and a questionnaire survey. Results indicated that students significantly improved their oral performance and recorded their positive perceptions. Students' oral performance significantly depended on their English proficiency. Their perceptions were not significant related to their English proficiency, gender, or college. Instant feedback and evaluation provided by ASR technology and online "Google" text-to-speech service both embedded in STEMUP helped students notice, modify and improve their listening and speaking skills. They were satisfied with the bilingual curriculum, which helped them increase understanding about content knowledge by the teacher's explanation in Chinese, and improve English listening and speaking skills by learning with STEMUP. This study is a good start in creating an interactive and communicative learning environment where translanguaging is effectively integrated with innovative technologies.

ABSTRACT

Tourists'satisfaction with their trips has two elements: affective (emotional impressions) and cognitive (rational evaluations). The former often depends on the latter (which includes the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual sub-elements). Trip satisfaction, nevertheless, is usually measured after the trip has finished. Thus, a lag effect may have certain impacts on the evaluations. In addition, the influences of the current COVID-19 pandemic on tourists'satisfaction, in general, and their emotions, in particular, have not yet been considered. The purpose of this study is to examine tourists' in-situ emotions by tracing their antecedents, including the above-mentioned factors and those beyond them. Using data collected from one young tourist sample (n = 298) in Vietnam, this study found that the intrapersonal element of "nonverbal communication skills,” the interpersonal element of "relationship satisfaction,” and the contextual elements of "destination attributes” and "symbolic values” were influencers of these tourists' positive emotions. The situational elements of "COVID-19 self-efficacy” and "COVID-19 fear” did not have positive impacts. Theoretical contributions to the literature, and practical implications for trip operators and tourists are discussed. ©Copyright IJHTS.

ABSTRACT

This chapter wants to shed light on the consequences that the COVID-19 pandemic had for human resource development (HRD) in organizations and in the labour market. We intend to compare three situations: Old Normal (before February 2020), New Normal (between March 2022 and October 2021), and Renewed Normal (since October 2021). Crucially, in organizations, work was mostly face to face in the Old Normal, remote in the New Normal, and there is a tendency for some hybrid form to be installed in the Renewed Normal. We compare the three phases in terms of four aspects of HRD and within virtual development relations, namely: work environment, competences, training, and skills. The chapter presents results from a literature review in SCOPUS database. We conclude that COVID-19 changed HRD, because technology changed the environment and, therefore, new competences were required. Therefore, a new form of training was also required, which, when in practice, originated new skills. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to optimize the line managers performances in the human resources (HR) division in answering the role of the HR management function problem in Medan City Manufacturing Company. The novelty proposed is a concept of HR management called "Human Resources Professional Transformation". Specifically, this concept discussed the ability of HR division line managers to make adaptive changes to the company's business-oriented functional divisions with managerial competence, commitment, innovation capability, and readiness for changes towards work performance. The population of this research was the line manager of the HR division, totaling 185 respondents. The sampling technique used a probability sampling approach with simple random sampling through the slovin formula, totaling 126 respondents. The analytical tool used is structural equation software through the SmartPLS application program. The results showed that managerial competence, commitment, innovation capability had a positive and significant effect through the HR professional transformation on the performance of line managers in the HR division. Meanwhile, readiness for change has a positive and insignificant effect on the HR Professional Transformation. Readiness for change also has a positive and insignificant effect on the Line Managers Performances in the Human Resources Division through HR Professional Transformation. Based on the suitability test of the research model, it proved that the HR Professional Transformation can answer the problem of the role of the management function to improve the line managers performances in the HR division with managerial competence, commitment, innovation capability, and readiness for change of 0.907.

ABSTRACT

Achieving a just transition to a low carbon economy and society, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, is arguably one of the greatest policy challenges facing governments. It is also of deep concern to businesses, employees and the organisations that represent them. Much of the focus, particularly at policy level, has been on the potential of this transition to create new jobs especially through the growth of renewable energy and clean technology. In this paper, we argue that this focus on ‘green jobs', and in particular new green jobs, grossly underestimates the skills needs of a future workforce able to deliver a transition to a more sustainable low-carbon economy. The focus of this study is to gain an understanding of what skills are required to support the transition beyond these sectors. It critically reports on the results of a series of in-depth interviews with senior managers in key organisations within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, UK. It sheds a light on the significant employment transitions taking place in organisations who are not specifically focused on delivering ‘green' products or services. It finds widespread acknowledgement of the importance of a green recovery, albeit predicated by economic growth. The key skills needs reported, at all levels were likely to be ‘soft' transferrable skills rather than ‘hard' technical skills. COVID-19 was recognised as both a disrupter and as a catalyst for a green transition.

ABSTRACT

This dissertation research study aimed to determine the predictors of early literacy skills in kindergarteners with dyslexia familial risk. The home literacy environment, preschool attendance, and parental self-efficacy are known predictors of early literacy skills, specifically letter naming knowledge, in typically developing children. Letter naming knowledge is an early literacy skill that is important to future reading achievement and outcomes. Letter naming knowledge is also a powerful pre-literacy predictor of dyslexia. Dyslexia commonly manifest as difficulties in acquiring basic reading skills and is highly heritable. The population for this study was primary caregivers of kindergarteners with a first degree relative with a diagnosis of dyslexia. Participants completed the Home Literacy Checklist, Tool to Measure Parenting Self-Efficacy via an online survey with questions regarding preschool attendance, letter naming knowledge skills, and the presence of a diagnosis of dyslexia among first degree relatives. SPSS Statistics (Version 28) was used to run descriptive statistics. The sample was comprised of 12 primary caregivers. This sample size was not appropriate for the chosen analysis of multiple regression. Using exploratory data analysis, the data was organized and summarized. Due to an inadequate sample size caused by a low response rate, no conclusions could be drawn from this data. The research questions were not answered and there were no findings. COVID-19 restrictions impacted research sites and the level of participation, with participants being less available, school closures, and mandatory quarantines, creating a difficult atmosphere for completion of this research study. As a result, the lack of data during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns led to several revisions of the research plan. The revisions involved eliminating the need for standardized test scores, using primary caregiver report to determine the level of difficulty of letter naming knowledge of the kindergarten student, and using social media to recruit participants. Recommendations for further research were comprised of ways to increase the pool of participants by expanding inclusion criteria, eliminating the use of standardized test scores, considering the length of the survey, and the use of social media along with an incentive. ABSTRACT

Contribution: This article provides a teaching methodology which combines project-based learning, self-regulated learning (SRL), and design projects (DPs) to improve the preparedness of students for computing science-related internships. The methodology is supported by the implementation of the educational technology that transforms the way teaching and learning is transformed to benefit on-campus and off-campus students equitably, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: Success in the workspace is governed by the ability of an individual to learn on-the-job and independently. Online learning has led to a shift from instructor-led learning to SRL. This requires individuals to discipline themselves, and be in control of their learning and education. Outcome: The success of internships is improved with skills learnt in class through hands-on real-world projects. Both on/off-campus students gain equitable relevant experience. The teaching methodology developed over several years combines project-based learning, SRL, and DPs. Application Design: The methodology was applied using a flipped classroom approach. The educational technology was used to enhance SRL before in-class learning. This way, in-class rote learning was replaced with hands-on projects. Exam assessments were replaced with DPs where soft skills and technical skills are applied. Findings: The effectiveness of the developed methodology is measured through quantitative and qualitative evaluation tools. The evaluation demonstrates that combining well-designed education technology for SRL, with in-class project-based learning and DPs, can improve students' chances in getting high-impact internships.

ABSTRACT

Reading is an important life skill and competency. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the reading culture got threatened as the purchase of books declined significantly, and encouraging reading skills emerged as a bigger challenge. However, setting up a reading club online in the postpandemic world and discussing books while using kindles, e-books, and open-source materials might hold the key. This chapter deals with the set-up of a 'Novel Room' at Jai Hind College, India (Autonomous higher education institute), which is a book discussion club, and the success had with it. Seventy-two individuals are mapped in the data, which is by and large positive. Through the feedback data collected, this chapter analyzes a semi-quantitative study that highlights the role of such student-centric clubs, especially book discussion clubs can foster healthy reading habits and developing other soft skills such as empathy, self-confidence, creativity, and ability to deal with social problems. © 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. ABSTRACT

Each student selected books during the last week of school and during the last days of the summer program, so that they had access to books when school was not in session. Since book ownership is an important motivator for reading, the students kept their books and were treated to one additional book on the last day of the program, when they took a field trip to a bookstore. Study Design Reallocating school resources required a research focus with data collection and analysis for continued approval of summer program funding. The mixed-methods design of the study included quantitative data (e.g., registration, attendance, STAR reading scores, Likert scale questions on student and parent questionnaires) and qualitative data (e.g., student focus groups, open-ended questions on student and parent questionnaires). Parents' written consent and students' assent were provided for STAR reading, focus group, and questionnaire data collection each summer.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of mobile learning technology for 21st-century skills-based training among teachers in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. This study adopted the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, which included constructs such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, social influence, mobile self-efficacy, student self-efficacy, behavioural intention, 21st-century skills-based training, and creative thinking skills. A survey was conducted with 619 teachers from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan who participated in a two-week mobile learning-based training session. The data were analysed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show that all hypotheses were supported, indicating a positive relationship between the constructs and the acceptance and use of mobile learning technology for 21st-century skills-based training. This study's findings suggest that by emphasising factors such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, social influence, mobile self-efficacy, and student self-efficacy when designing mobile learning interventions, teachers will be more likely to accept and use mobile learning technology for 21st-century skills-based training and contributed to sustainability by providing increased access to quality education.

ABSTRACT

Higher education has undergone substantial digital change due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which altered the status quo in education. Universities across the globe have initiated and adapted various course delivery modes to mitigate this unprecedented situation. Among these responses, online classes continue to be the most common. Therefore, this study examines institutional knowledge management and readiness to sustain online course delivery. Adopting a qualitative research design, this study used two methods, semi-structured interviews (n15) and online open questionnaires (n42), to gather data. Reflexive thematic analysis was then used to analyse the data. The study findings underline that the adaptability, flexibility, and approachability of the virtual learning experience are critical to determining an institution's readiness for online classes. Based on student perceptions, the faculties of digital skills, integration of innovative pedagogies, student readiness, skills and experience, and integration of learning resources are the main aspects that determine the readiness of universities for online learning.

ABSTRACT

Gulf economic development is increasingly taking place across digital spheres and being driven by actors with advanced technological skill sets. Gulf Arab governments like the United Arab Emirates aim to encourage technology-driven economic growth and innovation. Spurring recession-resistant growth is especially desirable in the aftermath of the coronavirus-induced economic downturn of 2020–2021. Regional policymakers want to position national citizens at the forefront of this technology-oriented economic development, and consequently they have pursued traditional workforce nationalization policies to ensure the continued participation of citizenry in the region's labor markets. Using the UAE as a case study, this work explores the prospects for better aligning direct labor market interventions with economic growth and development strategies. An Emiratization policy approach focused on digital and technology-oriented skills is raised as an alternative policy option, subjected to critical evaluation, and considered alongside an initial set of recommendations for harmonizing labor market demands with future-oriented growth. © 2023, Gulf Research Centre Cambridge.

ABSTRACT

One of the fundamental objectives of higher education is to prepare students to think analytically in order to develop and create knowledge, thus going beyond receiving information and building simple knowledge. That is why higher education must adapt its teaching and learning process to cultivate critical thinking of students. In order for academia to ensure the effectiveness of the development of critical thinking skills, student perceptions cannot be neglected, given that they are the ultimate receptors. In addition, investigating students' perceptions of critical thinking skills could guide future training methods that promote their development. The purpose of this research is to explore students' attitudes and beliefs regarding critical thinking skills, as well as aspects of their development in academia and their transfer to other contexts. The study is conducted at the Dunarea de Jos University of Galaţi and uses the questionnaire survey method to assess students' perceptions of critical thinking, from several perspectives: the level of knowledge on critical thinking skills, strategies for learning critical thinking skills, the qualities of a critical thinker, the way students relate to the COVID 19 pandemic and fake news. To obtain the necessary data, the questionnaire was distributed through Microsoft Forms and subsequently analyzed to describe students' views on critical thinking. A sample of 101 students from specializations in the field of socio-humanities completed this survey. The results of the study showed that students invoke the need to overcome difficulties in developing critical thinking skills by: training teachers to use critical thinking in the classroom;including and practicing critical thinking skills in applied activities at courses and seminars;applying debates and discussions in the classroom as teaching and learning strategies;translating the theories learned in courses into different case studies;use of training skills, questionnaires, homework;participation in group projects in a collaborative environment. ABSTRACT

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Covid-19 salgının Türkiye'de yükseköğretimden istihdama geçiş sürecinde yol açtığı sonuçları tespit edip, değerlendirmektir. Bu kapsamda Türkiye'deki yükseköğretim kurumlarının lisans programlarından Covid-19 öncesi (2019 Aralık) ve bir yıl sonrası (2020 Aralık) tarihleri itibarıyla, son üç yılda mezun olan yaklaşık bir milyon lisans öğrencisinin, eğitim ve istihdam verileri eşleştirilerek analiz edilmiştir. Lisans mezunlarının eğitim aldıkları alanlara göre kayıtlı istihdam oranları, ilk işe girme süreleri ve kazanç durumlarının yanı sıra eğitim alanı ve meslek eşleşme oranları da Covid-19 öncesi ve bir yıl sonrası olmak üzere mukayese edilmiştir. Yükseköğretim bölümlerinin sınıflandırılması Uluslararası Standart Eğitim Sınıflandırması (ISCED-F) ikinci seviyede yapılırken, meslek sınıflamaları Uluslararası Standart Meslek Kodu (ISCO-08) üçlü seviyede yapılmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre Covid-19 sürecinde kayıtlı istihdamın en çok azaldığı alan %11.8 ile Hukuk olurken, artışın en yüksek olduğu alan ise %7.3‘lük artışla Ormancılık olmuştur. Diğer yandan ortalama reel kazancın en çok azaldığı iki alan Hukuk (369 TL) ve Güvenlik hizmetleri (140 TL) olurken, reel kazancın en çok artış gösterdiği iki alan Veterinerlik (429 TL), Matematik ve Ístatistik (401 TL) olmuştur. Bunların yanı sıra, Covid-19 öncesi lisans mezunlarının ilk işe giriş ortalaması 9,0 ay iken, salgın sonrası bu ortalama 7,6 aya kadar düşmüştür. Son olarak, 2019 yılı sonunda eğitim aldığı alanda çalışanların oranı %67,5 iken, bu oran Covid-19 döneminde % 1,6 azalarak %65,9'e gerilemiştir.Alternate :The purpose of this study is to determine and evaluate the consequences of the Covid-19 epidemic in the transition from higher education to employment in Türkiye. In this regard, the education and employment data of approximately one million undergraduate students who graduated in the last three years from the undergraduate programs of higher education institutions in Türkiye, were matched and compared with pre-Covid-19 (December 2019) and one year later (December 2020). The registered employment rates, the search time for a first job, incomes of undergraduate graduates according to their fields of education were compared before Covid-19 and after one year. While the classifications of higher education departments were made at the second level of the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED-F), the occupational classifications were made at the triple level of the International Standard Occupational Code (ISCO-08). According to the research findings, the area where registered employment decreased the most during the Covid-19 period was Law with 11.8%, while the area with the highest increase was Forestry with an increase of 7.3%. On the other hand, the two fields in which the average real income decreased the most were Law (369 TL) and Security services (140 TL), while the two fields in which the real income increased the most were Veterinary (429 TL), Mathematics and Statistics (401 TL). In addition, while the average months of first job entry for undergraduate graduates before Covid-19 was 9.0 months, this average decreased to 7.6 months after the pandemic. Finally, while the rate of skills match was 67.5% at the end of 2019, this rate decreased by 1.6% and became 65.9% during the Covid-19 period.

ABSTRACT

Recent descriptions of the pandemic's effect in medical offices and hospitals depict unprecedented scenarios. The impact of COVID-19 on individuals sick enough to seek professional healthcare highlights the importance of communication skills. We propose an educational framework for pre-service and in-service healthcare professionals to improve communication skills during this crisis. Clinicians need to be mindful that the perception of the seriousness of the consequences of treatment vary greatly between individual patients and families. The four-quadrant scheme we offer is a way to help providers prepare to speak effectively about medical choices related to COVID. While most situations demand more than one type of communication competency, the focus here is on what might be advisable as the primary or "lead” skill. One of the most important elements in managing COVID-19 is to empower patients with appropriate information and emotional support. Additionally, we hope this model will inspire health professions faculty to think in new ways about teaching and coaching options in the practice-based learning of communication skills. © 2023 Helen Meldrum & Mary Hardy.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the attitudes of students enrolled in an English preparatory program of a Turkish state university towards the use of emergency remote teaching as a mode of distance education in the 2019-2020 COVID-19 outbreak and to reveal online distractors students experienced throughout this process. A total of 270 EFL students participated in the study;93 of these participants were female, and 177 were male. The study employed an explanatory sequential design, in which firstly quantitative data were collected using a scale ([alpha] = 0.871), and then qualitative data were gathered through open-ended questions followed by semi-structured ones. The quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS software while the qualitative data were analyzed through a thematic analysis conducted by the researcher and two other experts ([kappa] = 0.70). The results showed that the students held partially positive attitudes towards the use of emergency remote teaching as a mode of distance education. There were significant differences between the students' overall attitudes and their gender, digital literacy, technological accessibility, and perceived language success. The relationship between the online distractors students experienced during Emergency Remote Teaching and their attitudes was also discussed. The conclusions were made in the light of the findings, and implications and suggestions for further research were stated.

This paper examines regional differences in the demand for digital skills based on an analysis of 9 million vacancies posted on the Unified Digital Platform ‘Work in Russia' in 2018–2022. We examine approaches used in the literature to classify digital skills and using it develop our own classification. The paper studies the advantages and limitations of various indicators of the demand for digital skills. We suggest that the ratio between the share of vacancies requiring digital skills of a certain group in the region and the labor force population should be used as the most appropriate one. The results of the study show that in Russia there is still a significant regional differentiation in the employer's demand for all selected groups. Differentiation increased with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and decreased slightly in 2021–2022. We reveal that regions with a higher level of economic development have higher requirements for digital skills. Digital skills are more often required in regions specialized on primary production and less often in agricultural regions. Of the federal districts, a slightly higher level of demand for digital skills is observed in the Ural and Far Eastern federal districts, while a significantly lower level is observed in the North Caucasus federal district. © 2023 Spatial Economics. ABSTRACT

This qualitative study explores the implementation and adoption process of the use of digital devices and tools in teaching and learning before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal. Using Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory as a framework, the study examines the adoption and adaptation of digital devices by in-service secondary mathematics teachers (n = 62) and the teachers' perceptions of and preferences for instructional modalities. The findings suggest that, despite the increased reliance on digital devices during the pandemic, there is a lower likelihood of them being used in face-to-face classrooms in developing countries, such as Nepal. The adoption of online learning had not yet reached the adoption stage, even after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, online learning was not widely adopted by teachers in developing countries societies. The study also provides important insights into the challenges of and opportunities provided by using digital devices in post-COVID-19 classrooms, and its implications for policymakers and educators in Nepal. © 2023 by the authors.
